Indian Armed Forces: Structure & Commands
The Indian Armed Forces comprise three professional uniformed services: the Indian Army, the Indian Navy, and the Indian Air Force, under the management of the Ministry of Defence. Under Article 53(2) of the Constitution of India, the President of India is the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) serves as the permanent Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee and Principal Military Advisor to the Defence Minister. The Indian Army operates six operational commands and one training command (ARTRAC, Shimla). The Indian Navy maintains three operational commands: Western (Mumbai), Eastern (Visakhapatnam), and Southern (Kochi). The Indian Air Force operates five operational commands, one Maintenance Command (Nagpur), and one Training Command (Bengaluru). India's only integrated tri-service operational command is the Andaman and Nicobar Command (Port Blair).
