Indian Leaders & Social Reformers

Modern Indian history was decisively shaped by socio-religious reformers and visionary political leaders who campaigned against caste oppression, gender discrimination, and colonial rule. Raja Ram Mohan Roy founded the Brahmo Samaj in 1828 and successfully campaigned for the abolition of Sati under Lord William Bentinck's 1829 regulation. Jyotirao Phule established the Satyashodhak Samaj in 1873 in Pune, opening schools for girls and oppressed castes alongside Savitribai Phule. Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar chaired the Drafting Committee of the Indian Constitution, spearheaded the Mahad Satyagraha in 1927, and founded the Bahishkrit Hitakarini Sabha. Mahatma Gandhi led mass non-violent campaigns including the Non-Cooperation Movement (1920), Salt Satyagraha (1930), and Quit India Movement (1942), establishing satyagraha as an instrument of political mobilization.
