Landmark Medical Discoveries & Diagnostics

Landmark discoveries in medicine transformed global public health, therapeutic treatments, and clinical diagnostics. Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin, the first naturally derived antibiotic, from Penicillium notatum mold in 1928, later mass-produced by Howard Florey and Ernst Chain. Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen discovered X-rays in 1895, inaugurating modern medical radiology. Diagnostic imaging advanced further with Computed Tomography (CT), developed by Godfrey Hounsfield, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), based on nuclear magnetic resonance principles refined by Paul Lauterbur and Peter Mansfield. Other historical milestones include Joseph Lister's introduction of antiseptic surgical techniques, Frederick Banting and Charles Best's isolation of insulin in 1921, and laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery.
