Hindustani Music: Gharanas & Ragas

Hindustani classical music of Northern India is organized around melodic frameworks (ragas), time cycles (talas), and stylistic lineages (gharanas). Pandit Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande classified Hindustani ragas into a 10-Thaat framework (such as Bilawal, Kalyan, Kafi, Bhairav, and Yaman) to standardize music theory. Major vocal forms include the ancient, austere 'Dhrupad' (promoted historically by Swami Haridas and Tansen) and the more flexible, improvisational 'Khayal'. Stylistic traditions developed through distinct gharanas: the Gwalior Gharana (oldest Khayal lineage, founded by Nathan Pir Bakhsh), Agra Gharana (founded by Haji Sujan Khan), and Kirana Gharana (celebrated for swara precision, founded by Abdul Karim Khan and Abdul Wahid Khan). Prominent maestros include Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, and Pandit Jasraj.
