Agriculture & Rural India — Cropping Patterns, Agrarian Reforms & Rural Economy

Agriculture and rural livelihoods form the socio-economic foundation of rural India, sustaining national food security and employing a significant proportion of the country’s workforce. Agrarian production is governed by three distinct seasonal cycles—Kharif, Rabi, and Zaid—supporting staple cereal crops, pulses, oilseeds, and commercial cash crops across diverse agro-climatic zones. The sector was revolutionized by the Green Revolution initiated in the 1960s under agricultural scientist MS Swaminathan through High-Yielding Variety seeds and irrigation, alongside the White Revolution spearheaded by Verghese Kurien through Operation Flood’s cooperative dairy network. Modern rural development relies on institutional rural credit led by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, microfinance self-help groups, agro-processing value chains, and sustainable irrigation techniques to ensure rural prosperity.
