The subcontinent witnessed imperial consolidation under the Mauryan and Gupta dynasties, introducing sophisticated administrative statecraft, classical Sanskrit literature, and monumental architecture, before evolving into the dynamic agrarian and trade networks of the Delhi Sultanate and Mughal Empire. Colonial subjugation under the British East India Company and the British Raj catalysed widespread socio-religious reform movements and a nationwide freedom struggle led by figures such as Mahatma Gandhi, Subhas Chandra Bose, and Bhagat Singh. Following independence in 1947 and the integration of princely states under Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the nation embarked on democratic nation-building, constitutional governance, and planned economic modernisation.
